The Buddha’s appearance in this world began a movement of compassion for all beings. The Buddha preached of love, kindness and having the courage to practice those qualities with whomever we encounter. The Buddha often said that a person of nobility is not determined by birth, wealth or positions of power. A person is noble because of acts of kindness, compassion and love.
Our nation is experiencing great turmoil and divisions of thought and viewpoint. We are in a crisis that is causing everyday citizens so much anxiety. The very fabric of our nation is being torn apart by those in power. Many of our most fragile, innocent and vulnerable citizens are being targeted. People are being hurt and families destroyed by malice and cruel way leaders are enacting their policies.
This is the moment when our voices need to be heard. This is the moment when we must muster the courage to speak out. This is the moment when we need to take action. It is through action that one becomes true and real. The Buddha said that we are defined by our actions, our conduct. We become decent when we strive for that which is moral and good.
The Buddha was echoed by the founding fathers when they said that “all men are created equal”. The Buddha believed that all beings irregardless of their birth, their age, their sex are equal. Each deserves our kindness, our compassion, our respect and dignity. The Buddha preached the mutual bond of humanity. With the heart of kindness and compassion it is our responsibility to protect and care for one another.
Collectively we must practice everyday kindness, love and courage. We must support our fellow citizens who are being persecuted with the same moral courage the Buddha showed as he protected those who were weaker than himself.
May we all act with kindness and wisdom guided by the light of compassion that embraces all beings.
